Project leader

Edward Buck (edward.buck@netscape.net) has accepted responsibilty for leading this project.

Mission Statement

Define an addressbook schema that is:
  • global - supports locale-specific postal addressing schemes
  • interoperable - defines bi-directional mappings to important addressbook schemas, including standards like vCard and de facto product schemas such as mozillaOrgPerson or Evolution's schema
  • current - supports contact addresses for all popular internet-based communications protocols, e.g. instant-messaging
  • independent - does not use names or identifiers that imply an association with any specific software
  • web-aware - uses URL's to reference sophisticated or "large" contact-related information outside of the addressbook schema
To achieve this goal, we plan to develop a common logical addressbook schmema and a mapping or an instantiation of this schema to different kinds of addressbook store, including at least LDAP and vCard. It is intended to specifically invite participants from all major open-source groupware efforts but contributors from closed-source projects or related standards efforts are very welcome.
